Apologies and a Happy New Year

Hello dears,                                                                                                                                                   I really must appologuise about my lack of posting recently, its just that before Christmas I was under lots of stress with exams and lots of revision needed to be done leaving no spare time fore blogging, and then I just have seemed so caught up with the festive spirit that I seemed to have forgotten to post. But, as it is New Years Day, I will share with you that my news years resolution is to make sure I get back into the swing of things, making more frequent posts which hopefully you all will enjoy.                         Again, I am sorry for my absence, hope you are all well and had a very merry Christmas and have a happy New Year,                                                                                                                                             Lots of love                                                                                                                                                   Lil xxx

The Bomb Girls

Hello my darlings, I hope you are all well and free from this nasty bug that I have that seems to be spreading everywhere. I have spent this week in bed drinking lemsips trying to get rid of this dreadful cold and sickness, but so far nothing has worked. I really do hate being ill, as I am one of those people who love to get up and be busy doing things, so I find sitting here all day very fustrating, although it is a nice chance to relax. Anyway, to try to amuse myself this week, I have been on ITV player watching the catch up episodes of the Bomb Girls series that it currently on Tv in the UK every saturday night on ITV3 at 10pm. This series started being show in the States on September 11th, but resleased  in the UK on 10th November.
This poster shows the four main Blue Girls: Gladys (Top left), Kate (Top right), Lorna (Bottom left) and Betty (Bottom right)

I like how the factory is set in Canada, rather than typically a munitions factory in London, which is the main set of most wartime munitions factory, so I liked how it showed the overseas girls also helping out trying to send bombs to their boys to do their bit also. I had never seen this type of thing set in Canada like this before, unlike the amazing film War Bride, but that was set in the outbacks of Canada, the rural counrtyside unlike Bomb Girls which is set in a town. The four main characters that are followed all come from four different paths of life, which makes is so interesting to watch, as they are all bound together in the war spirit and all become friends, especially Kate, Gladys and Betty. At first Gladys is resented by the other factory girls as she comes from a well to do, rich background, allowing Gladys to possess the finer things in life, unlike the other girls who cannot atfford them, so she is resented at first, as she is the only girl to own a pair of silk stockings, to which Gladys gives away in order to fit in. She is given the name 'Princess', as they all feel that she won't be able to cope working in the factory, considering that beforew the munitions facotry she had never done a days work in her life. The other blue girls bet that as soon as Gladys brakes a nail, she will be off, but they are suprised as she battles the expecations of the other girls, as she is so passionate about helping to do her bit. Gladys is so beautiful and elegant, with her wearing some of the most beautiful garments, especially that red satin dress with fur sole in episode 3, so darling!

Gladys is probably my favourite character, although I do love the other girls as they all bring their own features into the series, but I find this 'little rich girl' so interesting. People think that Gladys will just be another pretty face who cannot cope in the factory, but she is constantly trying to make life better in the factory when it becomes apparant that there has been a batch of bad bombs made and the girls are blamed. The series highlights the sexism of the men towards the women in the 40's, with them thinking that they were not able to do their job right and should simply just go back to the kitchen. Gladys comes up with many ideas to prove them wrong, showing that the Blue Girls are not at fault when it comes to the making of the bombs, which Lorna eventually understands and the real culpret is found.

Now, back to Gladys's wardrobe and beauty, isn't she a doll?

Now look at this little beauty that she wore to the dance that she attended with the Blue Girls, where she met the most handsome soldier.
I love the pink colour of the dress contrasted with the black flowers, just looks so divine. The sweetheart neckline and cap sleeves are so gorgeous and make the dress look fun yet so elegant.

This is not the red satin number that I mentioned before, but this velevet one is just as good. I adore the way is is quite figure hugging, like a lot of 40's dresses, as not much fabric could be spared, but I think that the shoulder pads, V neckline and clasp just make this dress. I adore this and wanted of for myself and did find similar on http://www.collectif.co.uk/velvet-delilah-dress-p-sku03120702-c-dark-green.html, this along with a few other Collectif garments has made it way firmly onto my never ending Christmas list.

This picture show Gladys in her Vicory Munitions Factory uniform, along with her bolier suit, blue turban and polka dot blouse. Practical yet oh so beautiful. She does well to get her hair looking so good in this turban considering no hairpins were allowed in the factory.

Now this green outfit, beautiful isn't it. I love how she adds the accessories to this outfit, with the matching hat, bag and gloves to go with the green pattern in her loveky button up blouse. She looks stunning, and I love her make-up in this photo.

Thank you for reading my dears,I have not finished watching the series as I having only just finished veiwing episode 3, but I just couldn't wait to make a post about it. Once I am well again, I hope to give Glady's look a go, hair, make-up, outfit, the lot! Hope you enjoyed the post, all comments very much appreciated,
Love Lil x

Leibster Blog Award

Hello my darlings,
Today I was working my way through the my news feed, reading and commenting on all news posts, when I noticed that the lovely Ivy from the blog Eviestearoom had awarded me the Liebster Blog award, to which I am very thankful for.

These are the questions that were given to me by Ivy:

No 1. What inspired you to dress vintage/vintage style?

I have dressed vintage for about two years now, with my style interest being mainly the 30's-50's eras, as I love the elegance that those women had. My inspiration for dressing like these eras, is most probably my love of history, with my passion being to learn about World War Two, which then lead on to learn about the topic of the women at home, their fashion and how they coped with the wartime struggles, e.g rationing. I then started to look to these women, as not only fashion inspiration, but for the way they "kept calm and carried on", how they put on a brave face and kept to business as usual. Also, they first thing that got me interested in vintage fashion from a young age, was my great grandmothers mink fur coat, which I used to try on when I was little and I loved it, as I remembered feeling so glamorous, just like I'd stepped straight out of a Hollywood movie.

No 2. Which historical person or figure would you like to have dinner with?

This is such a hard choice, but I would have to choose Vera Lynn because she was the British troop's wartime Sweetheart who got to travel round to all of the bases and sing to all of our boys. I would love to hear about the places she had visited, the stories she had to tell and how she lifted the boys' morale in the time of war. Vera Lynn is such a good singer, her songs are so well written and were a great morale booster on the homefront as well, with all of her songs relevant to the struggles, e.g. the blackout, as she made a song called 'When the lights come on again'.

No 3. Which famous person/historical figure would you go shopping with?

It is so hard to choose a historical figure whom I would love to shop with, as I love all of the 1940's singers/actresses styles, so instead I am going to choose a modern day artist/singer: Paloma Faith. I love Paloma's wardrobe, she is a lover of vintage too and wears it so well, as she truly finds the most amazing pieces. I would love to see the places where she finds all of her treasures.

No 4. If you wear red lipstick, what is your favourite kind?

I do love to wear a bit of red lippy, as I think it makes you look so much more elegant, and personally, red does suit my complexion very well, and thankfully most shades seem to suit. However, I do have a favourite and it is from chanel called rouge allure. I just love how creamy it is, and it never dries out your lips, while it can be blotted and worn as a stain which is what I like to do best. There are some amazing pinks, but nothing says vintage glamour like red lipstick.

No. 6 What era inspired and intrigues you the most?

Without a shadow of a doubt, it would definitely have to be the 1940's, it was as if that era just oozes glamour and elegance. I love the history of the 40's with the second world war and all, the history, the music the fashion, that is why I love it so much.

No. 7 If you could live life as a second person, what era would you be in?

Again, it would definitely be in the 1940's in London and I would be a girl of around 17 years old working in one of the munitions factories helping towards the war effort. This was the life of my great nan and she said they were the best days of her entire life.

No.8 What is the strangest vintage item you own?

I can't really say that I have any odd items that spring to mind, as I only really buy vintage clothes, but maybe the strangest is a WW2 evacuee suitcase, but i don't think its that strange hahaaha.

No.9 `What are some great qualities you have?

I am rather a modest person, so am finding this question the hardest so far, but as I have to say something, this would be it. I think that I am a good listener, who tries to give good advice and hopefully I am a good shopping partner too!

No.10 What is your favourite material?

I love silk. I don't think you can beat the way this material elegantly drapes the body, creating movement like having a mind of its own as well as looking so typically vintage and glam.

No.11 What is your favourite vintage name for a female?

I love the name Dolly so much.

No.12 What is your favourite vintage name for a male?

I'm not too sure how vintage this is, but Charlie because its the name of all my grandads and great grandads. I know its funny, they all had the same name!

I was honoured to be awarded this, and so I am going to give the leibster award to five of my own followers:

Tootsie Rollers - The Boys Go Wild

Hello my dears,
I know I promised my new vintage party season find for this next post, but I wanted to show you all lovely lot something before I forgot. It is this new retro mostly 40's inspired band, made up of six galmourous ladies, called The Tootsie Rollers. I really like this band, as although there are other 40's wartime sweetheart inspired bands, I thought that there were none like this, who appear to have recently produced their own song. I liked the song, its really catchy and it does grow on you the more you listen to it, but what I really liked was the video. I love how at the beginning, each member of the band is introduced as a classic WW2 famous figure which was to boost the morale of the soldiers. I love how the video is in black and white, as well as being inspired by my favourite era. I think it has that old Hollywood glamour appeal to it, which I just love, similar to the Christina Aguilera video "Ain't no other man", which I just love, although Christina's is more 30's than 40's. I love how upbeat the song is, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did,

Rememberence Day

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

By John McCrae, May 1915

John McCrae starting to draft the poem on the evening of May 2nd, in the second week of the Battle of Ypres. It is believed that John got his inspiration from the death of his friend Lieutent Alexis Helmer, who was killed on the morning of May 2nd, when he left his dugout and was directly hit by a German 8 inch shell. John McCrae was serving as a military doctor and major at the time, but as the chaplain has been called away on other duties at the time of burial, John McCrae was asked to conduct the service, as he was in the same Canadian Artillery Unit. Alexis was burried at Essex Farm British Miliary Cemetry.
During 1915 John McCrae sent the poem to The Spectator magazine. It was not published and was returned to him. It was, however, published in Punch magazine on 8th December 1915.

To me, rememberence day is so important, as I feel that the job that our boys have done in all of the wars, and the current war if Afganistan is just so important, as they are putting their life on the life, risking everything for their country, to which we should be ever thankful for. On rememberence day, I try to think about all of the hardships they have suffered and endured, the pains and truamas that they have been through, and sadly the ones who were lost along the way, being killed for the sake of their people back at home. It is so sad to think about how many soldiers have died, thinking about all of those broken hearted mothers and sweathearts when they found out that their precious boys had died.

Today I shall be wearing my poppy with pride, as I have the upmost respect for those men, every single one of them, to which they desverve by everyone due to the amazing job that they have done and are still doing in todays war. I try to give as much as I can for a poppy, as I feel that the British Leigon needs as much money as it can get, as I feel that the old soldiers should be looked after better than they are, as afterall, today would not be the same if they hadn't carried out that awful job, seeing it through all the way to victory. I shall be doing my 2 minutes silence at 11 O'clock today and then I shall be making my way to the Imperial War Museum, London, which I think is one of the best museums as it has so much information, and has the old airoplanes hanging from the ceiling in the main hall. Also as it is rememberence day, some of the old soldiers that served in WW2 will be there, I love seeing them there, as I have been there before on Rememberence day, but it is also remorseful as they get upset, as all of the horrific memories of losing friends along the way and the battles they have fought come flooding back to them. When you see them, dressed in their best, with all of the medals pinned to their chest, you realise how brave they actually were, how much they actually went through, and how it is amazing that they still carried on with their life after the war ended, although some did have trouble, which is perfectly understandable as they had suffered so much.
Today, for me, will be a day of history and commemorating the soldiers, remembering what they did and celebrating their victories. Wear you poppie with pride, there is not a better accessory.

Thank You,

Hello my dears,
I am still here, I just didn't get round to taking these snaps soon enough for this post. I have been so busy lately, I really do not know where the time has gone, or in fact, where October has gone! The month has seemed to have run away with me, and I cannot believe that we are in November and already starting preparations for Christmas, although I do think it is too early to begin shopping. If I had my way, Christmas shopping wouldn't start until December, as I do believe that starting this early, does spoil the Christmas spirit, especially with the shops selling Christmas related items in September! Anyway, rant over, time for the post...

A couple of weeks ago, when the weather was a little warmer and it was possible to stand outside without occurring frost bite, my dad and I sorted out the garage, as I do plan to do a boot sale soon, to get rid of the some of the unwanted things that I have seemed to have collected, although I do find it hard letting go of them. Whilst sorting through, I found this one jem that I never knew I had and one that I had to bring inside from the cold and keep. It was this old Agfa camera, called the Billy 6.3, which my dad told me used to belong to my granddad. I did a bit of researching on the Billy 6.3 and found that this specific model was on sale between 1932, and 1942. I also found out that my granddad had occupied this camera, as he was a docker in the East End of London and he had most probably taken it from one of the cargo ships, how naughty hahaha!

The font door of the camera unclips to open up the lens, as you can see, the eye hole does not have any glass but i think that this is how is was originally, as there are no signs of breakage.

This is the back of the camera, with this little hole in the back, which indicated whether you have twisted the silver cap round enough to wind the film, ready to take the next photograph. Unfortunately, as this camera is so old, the film that I had to buy, only lets you take 8 photos, so I shall have to take them carefully, saving this camera only for the best vintage shots.

This photo shows the logo of the camera make Agfa, and the old leather strap as well as the clasp which unlocks the lens

The camera also came with is lovely brown leather case, which is a little battered as some of the original stitching has come undone, but it is still perfectly usable. Using the poppers, you can buckle the camera into the case and then open the lens and take pictures while the camera is still in the case, which is good as it protects the 'old thing' and means that you do not have the trouble of keeping getting out the camera every time to want to take a picture. The only thing I need to add to the case is a strap so that I can put it around my neck, as the original one appears to be missing, as there is evidence on the side of the case where the strap used to be.  As well as a strap, it also needs a good scrub as there is a lot of rust as it sadly has been neglected for so long!

This camera really does mean a lot to me, as it was my granddads, the only thing that I do have to remember him by, as I was unable to meet him, as he passed early in his life. Due to this, the camera holds also a lot of sentimental value, as I finally have a piece of vintage that is from my family. What I find a little unusual, it that this camera is made in Germany and was sold between 1932-42, in the years of the depression, Hitler and some of the war, so I found it a little strange as they were shipped to Britain in this time period. Although it could be because Germany and Britain were traders, which is why Britain did not want to be too harsh on Germany as the end of WW1, when Germany had to sign the Treaty of Versailles.

Thank You for reading my lovelies, I hope you all enjoyed the post. All comments are very much appreciated and I enjoy reading and replying to them all, as well as visiting your lovely blogs. The next post, I want to share with you another treasure I have found, this time at a vintage fair, perfect for the upcoming party season.

Katy Perry does 40's

  Hello My Dears,
I was on YouTube the other day, when I discovered this Katy Perry video with the song "Thinking of You" that I had never heard or seen before. I instantly fell in love with this video as I think it is a story that would have been true for many women in the 1940's, losing their loved one to the war and never being able to get over them or fall in love again. Not only do I love the meaning of the song and the lyrics, but I love all of the vintage outfits that Katy adopts, showing the American 40's fashion, which is sometimes overlooked, as the British fashion seems to be more famous due to the rationing restrictions. I love all of the clothes, there is not one outfit that she wears that I don't like! Although I think my favourite has to be the play suit and the two piece that she wears for the bicycle ride. This is a side to Katy that I have never seen before, as there is no hint in any other of her videos that she likes vintage, accept this one. Personally, I think she carries of the wartime look perfectly and that she too, should become a 1940's enthusiast!
I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did, and do you think that the underwear that she wears for a lot of this video looks like the famous underwear from the brand What Katie Did?
